A wealthy and beautiful Spanish Countess prepares for a private dinner party with her husband and children at the White House with the President and First Lady.
As she arrives, she casts her mind back to a very different life.

Jim, a young boy from a deprived and abusive home in London’s East End, is brought up convinced that he is trapped in a body that should be female. Living in an unsympathetic time – the 1960s, in an unsympathetic place – the slums of East London, he is trapped. Aware of his TS condition, he suffers abuse and humiliation, culminating in a homosexual predator taking advantage of him. In a moment of rage and panic, he lashes out, to dire consequences.
Finding himself in jail, undergoing special ‘treatment’ to combat his ‘anger’ problems, the young man finally is abused by the state.
When you hit the bottom, there is only one way to go; and a girl called Jemma decides to go up…..

….and up

……………………..and up.

A Fairy Tale edition by Tanya Allan Literature Fiction eBooks

I have read quite a bit of Miss Allan's work, and although I can't say this is her best effort, it is still well worth the time taken to read it. As always, her characters are alive and real; she uses her talent to not only fully flesh out her main characters, but also many of the lesser characters of the story as well. Unlike many authors who simply allow their main characters to swim through a sea of shallow images representing the secondary characters of their work, Tanya builds more into all of the people populating her works.

This story had me alternately smiling (even laughing in places), and crying. The plot building my emotions up high, just to drop me into the depths of misery that her main character Jemma was feeling. The story not only kept my attention, but in the end it surprised me. A seemingly brief encounter with a character at the very beginning of the book comes back around at the ending and resolves itself into a major point of the story. This was not only unexpected, but it was also a very nice little twist of the story line.

Throughout the story, I found myself living vicariously through Jemma, enviously wishing I could be her - even with the horrible hardships she faces early in her life, and even with the misery she knows as a youth, I found myself imagining myself to be her - and praying that it might somehow happen. By the end of the story, I was not only wishing I could be her, but I would have settled simply for the opportunity to know this wonderful woman and to have had her helping hand guiding me through the tribulations of my own life.

I would recommend this story to not only existing fans of Miss Allan's work, but also to those new to her talent.

A Fairy Tale edition by Tanya Allan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

when i first read this it read like someone real life adventure, it was intriguing and exciting with some suspense and some very soul searching issues.
I sometime wonder if it could really happen, very good got my imagination wondering.

lv ur writing
Not quite a 5 but better than 4 1/2.
Hate the title.
The story is a trifle graphic, but overall, interesting and entertaining.
A must have for anyone's collection of Tanya Allan's writings.
What an enjoyable first book. While predictable in outcome, it is a pleasant and interesting journey. I am hopeful for more.
TANYA ALLAN IS ONE OF THE TALENTED WRITERS, WHOM IS ABLE TO CREATE AN ENVIREMENT THAT LETS YOU GET DEEP INTO HER STORY. YOU FEEL YOU ARE THERE, PERHAPS ONE OF THE CHARACTERS IS YOU. OPEN YOUR EYES AND MIND.
There is no doubt that Tanya writes well in this genre. The one thing that I don't like about her writing is the prologue that she starts many of her books with. To be honest it is like reading the last 10 pages of the book first which takes a lot from the story. Basically I now ignore the prologue in her books and go to the first chapter to start and then read the prologue after reading the book.
I enjoyed this as much as the others in this linked set. I hesitate to call it a series, but its the closest word for it. I actually envy Jemma her ending, while not so much the beginning. I hope to see Stephanie s' story sometime soon.
This is a wonderful love story about transition and love and romance. Unlike some of Tanya's books, there are no Jane Bond characters, but there is a wonderful story of a life in which a transgender woman meets a wonderful man, falls in love, has a bit of upset, and then make up and have a remarkable life together.

There is some sexual content but it's well written, not gross or abusive, and shows a poetic style describing activities that may be hard for some people to understand and accept, but Tanya does it beautifully. Not for young people, probably best for someone at least 17.
